The alkali/lye is used as part of the soap-making reaction. When saponification is properly completed, it reacts with the oils and is converted into soap. Therefore, the finished soap is not intended to contain any lye. The result is primarily soap and naturally occurring glycerin, along with the other ingredients included in the final formula.
